During Monday night's New Year's Day drawing, a single ticket sold in Michigan has matched all six numbers to win the estimated $842.2 million Powerball jackpot.
According to Powerball, it's the fifth-largest Powerball jackpot ever won.
According to a press statement from Powerball, the fortunate winner who rings in the new year as a millionaire will have the choice of accepting a lump sum payment of an estimated $425.2 million, before taxes.
The winning numbers on Monday were Powerball 1 and 12, 21, 42, 44, and 49.
According to Powerball, ticket sales exceeded the jackpot's initial estimate of $810 million, making it the tenth-largest US lottery jackpot ever won.
Additionally, this was the first Powerball jackpot win on New Year's Day since the game's inception.

One million dollars was won by tickets in California, Connecticut, Florida, and Maryland. According to Powerball's website, two more tickets that were sold in Texas and Florida each won $2 million jackpots since they have the Power Play option.
"What an amazing start to the New Year for Powerball!" exclaimed Powerball's Drew Svitko. "This jackpot run will provide additional funds for hundreds of deserving groups funded by U.S. lotteries, in addition to our huge jackpot winner. We are grateful to our players for making this happen! Cheers to a prosperous new year!
Earlier outcomes
On October 11, a ticket from California won the jackpot for the last time, totaling an incredible $1.76 billion. About 70 miles away in Frazier Park, at Midway Market & Liquor, was where the ticket was sold.

As of now, no one has claimed their prize; they have until October 11 of next year to do so. According to Carolyn Becker, a spokesman for the state lottery, if no one steps forward, the funds will be donated to California public schools.

There is a 1 in 24.9 chance of winning any prize at all, but there is a 1 in 292.2 million chance of hitting the jackpot.
