Blockworks claims that Gnosis Chain—previously known as xDai Chain—started the Dencun hard fork before Ethereum. A proof-of-stake blockchain called Gnosis Chain is intended to preserve complete Ethereum compatibility, including the capacity to execute all hard forks directly. By providing blobs, a new dedicated data storage channel, the Dencun update seeks to extend Ethereum across layer-2 networks and will drastically lower transaction costs on Ethereum rollups.
According to Phillippe Schommers, director of infrastructure, Gnosis Chain intends to remain identical to Ethereum, enabling applications created for Ethereum to transfer to Gnosis Chain without any problems. Ethereum core engineers indicate that the Dencun hard fork proceeded smoothly and that blobs are now finalizing the chain.
Rollups won't reach sub-cent transaction rates, according to Gnosis co-founder Martin Koeppelmann, but layer-2s on the Gnosis Chain will help the network grow. With Gnosis Chain, one of the first uses of layer-2s will be for Gnosis Pay, a base layer payments network that is now in operation. To facilitate regulatory compliance, the network intends to shift to layer-2s, maybe segregated by jurisdiction.
As the infrastructure advances, the emphasis will go to developing non-technical apps and smoothing the transfer between Ethereum and layer-2 networks.
